Dead Parrot privacy policy

Updated 6 November 2026 · version 0.6.15.0

Dead Parrot / 活著鸚鵡 is a CubicleZoo browser extension by Patrick OC. It displays a parrot and lyric text in tabs you enable. It does not play audio. This policy describes the extension; visits to the CubicleZoo website are covered by the website privacy policy.

What happens in an enabled tab

When you enable a tab, the extension reads visible page text locally to select short Chinese phrases for lyric searches. It excludes editable fields, input boxes and navigation from automatic extraction. Text you explicitly select or enter for a manual search is also used. Full articles are not sent by the extension; the selected search phrase is sent to the chosen lyric provider. A phrase may still contain information from the page you are reading.

The current pointer position, clicks and drags are processed locally to animate and control the parrot, without keeping an activity log or sending those interactions to a server. The current page URL (origin, path and query) and phrases already tried are kept in the page memory to detect navigation and enforce the automatic-success limit. The extension does not send the visited page URL to its lyric providers as a search field or maintain a separate browsing-history database.

Lyric services and data sent

The default provider is NetEase Cloud Music (interfacepc.music.163.com). The extension sends the search phrase, then the selected song ID to obtain lyrics. Optional Genius searches send the phrase to genius.com and fetch candidate lyric pages. The LRCLIB + Musixmatch option sends search phrases and candidate song/artist metadata to lrclib.net and, if you configure a key, api.musixmatch.com; Musixmatch also receives that API key and relevant song IDs. Only the selected provider flow is used.

These requests use HTTPS and omit website cookies/login credentials. The services still receive ordinary network-request data, such as your IP address, and process requests under their own terms and policies. CubicleZoo does not operate a relay for these requests or receive copies through a developer server. Returned lyrics and metadata are used to provide the visible feature. We cannot control the providers’ logging or deletion practices.

Local settings, session state and temporary data

Chrome local extension storage holds appearance size, dock edge/position and chosen provider. If you enter a Musixmatch API key, it is stored locally and sent only to Musixmatch for its API calls. The extension does not apply its own encryption to that local key and does not sync it through chrome.storage.sync.

Chrome session storage holds IDs of enabled tabs. Closing a tab or disabling it removes its enabled state; a browser restart or extension reload clears session state. Refreshing/navigating a still-enabled tab restores the parrot but starts a new document’s playback and automatic budget.

The background worker keeps up to 30 search results in memory and reuses entries for up to 15 minutes. Expired entries are not reused, but may remain in memory until replaced or the worker stops. Page-level URL/phrase budgets last for that document’s lifetime. Local keyword-based emoticons do not make network requests or change the original lyrics.

Permissions and your controls

HTTP and HTTPS website access plus scripting allow the extension to inject its interface only into tabs you enable and restore it after a refresh or navigation, including to another website. The extension does not automatically enable unrelated tabs. Chrome’s restricted pages are not supported; limiting website access may prevent restoration.

storage saves settings and session state; contextMenus adds the selected-text lyric action. Click the toolbar again or the dialogue’s × to disable the current tab. Close a tab to clear its activation. You can change website access in Chrome, clear the API key in Options, or uninstall the extension to remove its local settings. This does not delete requests already received by external services.

No advertising profiles or payment collection

The extension contains no developer analytics or advertising SDK and does not sell user data or use page text to build advertising profiles. It has no account-registration or payment feature. Its data use is limited to providing the lyric companion and its settings.

Options links to the CubicleZoo website and this privacy policy. Those sites are contacted when you follow a link; the destination website’s privacy policy then applies. The extension does not preload those pages or transmit article text to CubicleZoo.
